How To Install Windows 10 on Your Mac Using Boot Camp?

If you are using a Mac, but still missing Windows. Well, now you can easily install Windows 10 in Mac using the special Bootcamp feature. Soon after it, the first Intel-based Mac arrived in the market in 2009.

Apple released a tool known as Boot Camp which is a great tool to start their Macs natively in Microsoft Windows. Every time your computer switches on, you can easily switch between Mac and Windows with just a button.

One of the main reasons why Mac uses Boot Camp is to play Windows-only games like PC MMOs such as Star Trek Online, Tera, and Star Wars: The Old Republic only runs on Windows. Boot Camp is also great at running Windows software.

Prerequisites

Before installing Windows 10 on your Mac, there are some things that you would need. Find the list of all the prerequisites before installing Windows 10 on your Mac.

1. Mac Models: All Mac models are not compatible with Windows 10. Therefore for installing Windows 10, one must have any of these Mac Models.

  • MacBook introduced in 2015 or later
  • Mac Air introduced in 2012 or later
  • MacBook Pro introduced in 2012 or later
  • Mac mini introduced in 2012 or later
  • iMac introduced in 2012 or later
  • iMac Pro (all models)
  • Mac Pro Introduced in 2013
  1. The latest macOS updates: The latest updates will include updates to Boot Camp Assistant. This Boot Camp Assistant will be used to install Windows 10.
  2. Free storage space:64GB or more free storage space on your Mac startup disk.

A 64 GB of free storage space is good, but 128 GB of free storage space provides the best experience, this will help in automatic Windows updates.

If your Mac has a 128GB of memory (RAM) or more, the Windows installer will require at least as much free storage space as your Mac’s memory.

  1. You may require an external USB flash drive with a storage capacity of 16GB or more.
  2. A 64-bit version of Windows 10 Home or Windows 10 Pro on a disk image (ISO) or other installation media

If you are installing Windows on your Mac for the first time, you may have to use a full version of Windows, not an upgrade.

Download a Windows 10 disk image for Microsoft, if your copy of Windows is in a USB flash drive, or you have a Windows product key and no installation disc.

You may need to create a disk image of the DVD if your copy of Windows came on a DVD.

How To Download the Windows 10 ISO File

How to download the Windows 10 ISO file

For a start, you need a Windows 10 ISO file from the Microsoft website. This can be downloaded directly to your internal hard drive.

Step1: Open your browser in Macbook and Navigate to the Microsoft Windows 10 ISO download page.

Step2: In the Dropdown menu, select edition

Step3: In the Windows 10 Anniversary Update section, click on Windows 10. Once installed, you can download the creator’s update through windows.

Step4: Click on Confirm.

Step5: You will see a dropdown menu below select the product language, click on the dropdown.

Step6: Choose the language of your choice.

Step7: Click on Confirm.

Step8: You will see two download options: 32-bit download and 64-bit download. Choose the 64-bit Download.

Step9: Click on the Save and the ISO file will be downloaded.

Once the Windows file has been downloaded, follow the steps as mentioned in the dialog box and your file will be installed.

Once the Windows 10 ISO has been downloaded, the following steps have to be followed:

Step1: From the utility folder in Applications, Launch Boot Camp Assistant.

Step2: Click on Continue and the Boot Camp will automatically locate the ISO file on your computer.

Step3: In the Partition section, click and drag the slider. The Storage is by default selected to 48 GB, but you can add as much storage as you want which is within the limits of the drive.

Step4: Click on Install and the Windows support software will be downloaded.

Step6: Type your password in the Tab provided and click Ok.

This will restart your Mac and you will see the Windows 10 setup screen.

Step7: From the dropdown, choose the language of your choice.

Step8: Click on Install Now.

Step9: If you have a product key, then enter your product key. If not, then click on I don’t have a key. You can also enter the product key after the installation.

Step10: Based on your preference choose either of the two: Windows 10 Pro or Windows 10 Pro. Click on Next.

Step11: Click on Custom: Install Windows Only.

Step12: Click on Drive 0 Partition X: BOOTCAMP. Make sure you do not choose anything else.

Step13: Click Next and Windows 10 will be installed. During this process, your Mac may restart a number of times.

Step14: When the Windows 10 setup screen appears, click on Use Express Settings or Customize Your Installation. You should choose express settings, as all can be changed after the installation.

Step15: Type the username and password for your account. After you are done, click on Next.

Step16: From the options choose if you wish to or not use Cortana.

Windows 10 will now boot completely and you will be able to use Windows on your Mac normally.

When Windows 10 loads for the first time, a Boot camp software installer will pop up automatically on the screen.

This has to be followed by the below steps

Step1: In the popup, click on Install.

Step2: Click and tick the box next to I accept the terms in the license agreement.

Step3: Click on Install.

Step4: Once the installation is complete, click on Finish.

This step is extremely important, while installing Windows on your Mac, using Boot Camp as it installs a bunch of drivers and software that will help make your Windows 10 experience as good as possible.

Returning to MacOS From Windows 10

Once Windows has been installed, the best part is that you can easily switch back and forth between operating systems.

Step1: In the Windows 10 taskbar, click the Show hidden icons button

Step2: Click on the Boot Camp Button

Step3: In your OS X, click restart

Once your Mac starts restating it will be brought back to macOS. Another method of switching is to restart your Mac and long press on the option key on your keyboard until a boot menu appears. You will get options to choose from IOS or Windows, you can choose which OS to load.

Updating Windows 10

Once Windows 10 has been installed, you can always update it to the creator’s update. This too is an easy method and can be done by the following steps:

Step1: Click on the Start button

Step2: On the screen, a gear appears, the Settings button. Click on it.

Step3: In the Settings, click on Update & Security.

Step4: Click on the Check for updates to see all the updates in Windows.

Soon the creator’s update will start downloading and will install. Follow all the steps shown in the dialog box, and you’ll be up to date in no time.

Install Windows From The Flash Drive or External Optical Drive

This process will require you to have a little patience as you will have to download Windows ISO with a flash drive.

Step1: Insert the Windows installer DVD or Flash drive into an external USB optical drive.

Step2: Wait for the media to come up in the finder. Once that is done, hit Go.

Step3: In the same screen, select Utilities, and under that select Disk Utility.

Step4: In the disk utility, select the USB optical drive or Flash drive to highlight it.

Step5: Under file, select a new image and choose the DVD or Flash Drive which has your Windows software for installation.

Step6: From the Image Format menu, select DVD/CD and choose None

Step7: Save the file and enter your username and password if asked to.

A progress bar will appear, wait for it to complete.

Step8: Once the file has been saved, eject the Windows DVD or flash drive.

Step9: Using Finder, locate the disk image and rename it with the file extension “.iso”.

Step10:  In the application, I got to utilities and open Boot Camp Assistant. Checkmark the following boxes:

Create a Windows 8 or later version install disk

  1. Download the latest Windows support software from Apple
  2. Install Windows 8 or later versions.

Step11: Locate your renamed ISO file when prompted and click Ok to begin installing windows.
