How to Reinstall Older Version of Apps on the iPhone & iPad

Apple provides a new version of iOS almost every year. The Apps that are available in the Apple store need to stay up-to-date so that they are compatible with the new iOS version on the latest devices. The iOS operating system has updated to iOS 12 and supports most models of Apple’s devices. Most Apple users do not want the new version of the apps on their iPhone and iPad. It may be because the updated app is not compatible with their devices.

Ways to Download Older Version of Apps on iPhone

In this case, users need to download the previous version of the app. Each time you try and download an app from the app store. But it automatically downloads the newest version of that app on your iPhone. You find that the old versions of the apps are not available for you to download when there is a new version of the app available. So, here are the methods to reinstall the older version of iPhone or iPad apps:

Suppose Facebook has the support of iOS 7. You can download the app even if it does not support that iOS version.

Follow the given below steps:

  • You need to go to the App Store on your iOS device.
  • Then search the app you want to re-install.
  • When you find the app, install it on your iOS device.
  • Then you will get a popup message as ‘Facebook requires iOS 8 or later, you can still download the older version of the app.’
  • You need to tap on Download the prompt to confirm.
  • Then complete the downloading process.
  • Then launch the app and sign in into it and start using it just like before.

If the new version of the app is compatible with your device but you still want to use the older version.

Follow the given below steps:

  • You need to open iTunes.
  • Then connect your iPhone and stop any syncing process.
  • You need to click on the Apps link from the sidebar in iTunes. It shows the apps that are available in the last backup. Basically, it shows all the apps that you installed and synced.
  • Then find the app whose older version you want to install.
  • Then drag and drop it on the iPhone section in the sidebar or the device section.
  • Then sync the iPhone with iTunes.

Install from My Purchase in App Store

This method does not cover those apps which you did not downloaded or purchased before. The app does not need to be on your device. You only need your Apple ID.

  • If you run an iOS version older than iOS 11 then go to Purchased at the bottom of the App Store. If you are in iOS 11 then go to App Store.
  • Then tap the circle face on the upper right corner of the page to find My Purchase. Here, you can see all the apps you have bought previously.
  • You need to find the app that you want to install on your device.
  • Then tap the cloud icon on the right side to download it back to your device.
  • You need to check if Apple has an older version of that app. If yes then there is a pop-up prompt “there is an older version of the app that is compatible with your device, download this version now?”
  • You need to click on Yes to install an old version of the app on your iPhone or iPad.

Install Old Version of App by Syncing

This method does not need the app to be on your device or Apple ID. You need another Apple device that runs the latest iOS operating system.

  • You need to download the app you want to install on your new Apple device.
  • Then the purchase record is synced in your Apple ID.
  • You need to login to the same Apple ID on your old iPhone or iPad.
  • Then go to App Store and tap My Purchase to find the app you want to install.
  • Then tap the cloud icon on the right side to download it on your old Apple device.
  • If there is a compatible version in Apple’s app server, Apple suggests you install the old version of the app.

 Install Old Version of Apps on Old iOS Devices

In order to do this, you need to purchase the app. It is stored in your cloud as an app you previously downloaded. So that you are able to have access to the old version of the app. Follow the given below steps to download the old version of an app:

  • You need to sign in into the Apple ID that you used to download the app.
  • Then open the App Store.
  • Then click on Account.
  • Then click on Purchases. This shows you a list of all the apps you purchase using that Apple ID.
  • You need to find the app you want to install.
  • Then click on the iCloud icon. This shows that the app stored in your iCloud.
  • Then click Download. You get the pop-up message states that “Download an older version of this app? The app should start downloading.

Download the App on Your New iOS Device

If you cannot find the app in the list of purchased apps then you have never downloaded the app earlier. You can download the app on a new iOS device that has the iOS version for which the app is compatible. You must have a new iOS device to download the app on. If you do have a newer iOS device, follow the given below steps to purchase an app on your new device:

  • You need to sign in into the Apple ID you use on your old iOS device.
  • Then open the App Store.
  • Then find the app.
  • Then download and install the App.
  • You need to go to the App Store on your old iOS device
  • Then click on Account.
  • Then click on Purchases.
  • You need to find the app you purchased on your new iOS device.
  • Then click on the iCloud icon.
  • Then click Download.

You can use the methods listed above if the current version of the apps is not compatible with your device.
